Government-Funded Childcare Schemes
The UK government offers several funding options to help with childcare costs. Here’s an overview of the main schemes available:
15 Hours Free Childcare
All three and four-year-old children in England are entitled to 15 hours of free childcare per week for 38 weeks of the year. This universal entitlement ensures that every child can benefit from early education, laying a strong foundation for future learning.
30 Hours Free Childcare
Working parents may be eligible for an additional 15 hours per week, totaling 30 hours of free childcare. To qualify, each parent (or the sole parent in a single-parent household) must:
- Be working (including self-employment).
- Earn at least the National Minimum Wage or Living Wage for 16 hours per week.
- Have an income of less than £100,000 per year.
This extended entitlement is designed to support working families by reducing childcare costs and enabling parents to maintain employment.
Tax-Free Childcare
Under the Tax-Free Childcare scheme, the government contributes £2 for every £8 you pay into an online childcare account, up to £2,000 per child per year (or £4,000 for a child with a disability). This scheme is available to working families, including the self-employed, across the UK.
Universal Credit for Childcare Costs
If you are eligible for Universal Credit, you may be able to claim back up to 85% of your childcare costs, up to a maximum of £646.35 per month for one child or £1,108.04 per month for two or more children. This support is available for children up to the age of 16.
